A Short Guide to Medical School in Singapore.

NUS and NTU are the 2 Universities in Singapore which offer the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme which spans a total of 5 years.

The course curriculum consists of 5 phases. The first two are focused on basic topics and an introduction into medicine while the next 3 are concerned with more specific aspects. Both universities ensure that students gain practical and hands-on experience in caring for patients through associations with hospitals.


Prerequisites and submission requirements

Students can apply for medicine in both NUS (Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine) and NTU (Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine) after having achieved a high school diploma.

NUS

  • ​The academic requirements for students taking the IB programme would be a pass in HL Chemistry and a pass in either HL Biology or Physics. Singapore Citizens and Permanent residents may also have to fulfill a mother tongue requirement.

  • The BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) must be taken 12 months prior to admission to NTU.

  • The personal statement is a 300 word essay about the applicant , why they wish to pursue medicine and regarding their achievements beyond school activities.

  • Referee reports are forms in a question and answer format which need to be completed by the applicants form teacher or civics tutor.

  • The selection interviews take place in April in the form of panel interviews.

  • ​The academic requirements for students taking the IB programme would be a pass in HL Chemistry and a pass in either HL Biology or Physics. Singapore Citizens and Permanent residents may also have to fulfill a mother tongue requirement.

  • Includes a personal statement of around 500 words introducing the student and the reasons behind their interest in taking up medicine.

  • List of achievements consisting of 10 achievements or activities of the application carried out within the past 2-3 years.

  • An official testimonial is a document submitted by the school regarding the student’s academic abilities and character.

  • 2 referee reports which are online questionnaires with 6-8 questions which are required to be filled by nominated referees of shortlisted candidates.

  • 2 assessments: Focused Skills Assessments (FSA) and Situational Judgment Test (SJT).

    • FSA includes role play and interview stations etc.

    • SJT involves hypothetical scenarios or ethical dilemmas within medical settings.


Another option to take medicine in Singapore would be to attend the Duke-NUS medical school for a period of 4 years after conferring a bachelor's degree.
