Attending Medical School in India

Medicine is an extremely complicated subject area, and it's equally difficult to get into medical school. Every year there are a plethora of applicants fighting for only 54,348 seats; recently these seats have been increased to 83,275.

There are around 542 medical colleges and 64 stand-alone PG Institutes, which provide the undergraduate medical degree known as bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery or MBBS.

This article will help you simplify the whole admission process, from the admission requirements to testing requirements preceding the counselling session, for medical schools in India.

First of all, the academic requirements. Students are required to get at least a 50% score for the general category and 40% for the reserved category in their 12 grade/senior high final exams for all subjects including physics, chemistry, and biology (zoology/botany). All candidates must be 17 years or older as of 31st December of the year of admission, but not older than 25 years.

Next are the testing requirements. All applicants applying for MBBS in India will have to take the entrance exam known as the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET. This is the only entrance test that will help get admission to the MBBS course provided by all medical colleges in India including both government and private institutions. There are many other entrance exams students can take but they are not as important as NEET.

After getting the results of NEET, students are called for a counselling session. In this session, students are informed about available colleges throughout India. The counseling process is arranged according to NEET ranking, students who had done exceptionally well in their entrance exam will be offered seats from more reputed colleges.

Additional documents required include a valid school transfer certificate, code of conduct certificate, medical certificate, health check-up certificate, and no criminal record certificate.

Lastly the MBBS course. The duration of this undergraduate course is 5.5 years: 4.5 years of academic education and 1 year of internship. In this course of MBBS, students not only learn about the medical industry and healthcare practices but also learn about ethical practices and volunteering projects. In total, MBBS provides 19 subjects including Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Pathology, Ophthalmology, etc.

In the first year, some students may find MBBS immensely hard due to heavy theory-based studies which are very different from academics in school but eventually, students who thoroughly enjoy medicine and are passionate about it will find these medical practices nothing but fascinating.

This whole process of getting admission and studying this course may seem strenuous at first, but starting early and taking one day at a time will bring you to the brighter side of the tunnel.
